Financially-savvy Consumers Choose CUs, Poll Finds
Thursday, July 18, 2013 7:30 AM

Although the average consumer might prefer a bank over a credit union, a GoBanking Rates.com poll finds that financially-savvy consumers overwhelmingly choose credit unions as their preferred financial institutions.

The American Banking Preference Poll ran from June 12 to July 11. The informal poll revealed that community banks were the top choice among poll respondents, with 41.2 percent stating they prefer local banks over national banks and credit unions. Credit unions came in second place, however, with 34.4 percent of votes; while national banks ranked third with 22.9 percent (1.5 percent chose “other”).

Worth noting, however, is that among the financially-savvy, 73.76 percent of poll respondents preferred a credit union, compared to:

  • Local community bank: 14.18 percent
  • National bank: 9.93 percent
  • Other: 2.13 percent
