Financial Literacy Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol
Wednesday, April 5, 2017 6:30 AM

Oklahoma Financial Literacy Day
Oklahoma State Sen. Gary Stanislawski, co-author of HB1694 shows why he supports increased funding for financial literacy training in public schools.

Tuesday was Financial Literacy Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol. The day culminated with a Capitol reception attended by several legislators and state officials. State Treasurer Ken Miller discussed the importance of teaching young people how to manage their finances at an early age, and he pledged support for initiatives to bring a more robust financial literacy curriculum to public schools.

Also on hand were State Rep. Randy McDaniel and State Sen. Gary Stanislawski, authors of House Bill 1694. If passed, the measure would allocate an additional $300,000 for financial literacy courses in Oklahoma public schools because funding for the program would come from an additional fee on payday lenders and not the general revenue fund. Stanislawski expressed confidence the bill would be passed into law.

HB1694 has passed the House and is now up for consideration in the Senate Appropriations Committee.
