Filene Institute Survey Seeks Input on Growing Credit Union Regulations
Tuesday, June 4, 2013 6:25 AM

The Filene Institute is calling on credit unions to participate in a survey about the effects of growing regulatory burdens on credit unions. The survey results will serve as research for a study conducted by Professors Panu Kalmi of the University of Vaasa in Finland and Giovanni Ferri of LUMSA University in Italy.

The goal of the research is to better understand how much time credit unions spend trying to comply with specific regulations and measure the various effects among credit unions of different asset sizes.

In the announcement of its survey, Filene stated, “When legislatures, regulators, and international standards organizations write financial regulations, they follow the headlines, writing checks and balances designed to fend off the last crisis and to target egregious offenders or systemically risky organizations.”

The Filene Institute called the merits of this approach “debatable,” adding that these regulations, more often than not, fail to account for smaller financial institutions such as credit unions.

The deadline to complete the survey is June 14. Credit unions interested in participating can visit http://www.filene.org/blog/post/research-study-credit-union-regulatory-burden .
