Don’t Tax My CU Tuesday
Tuesday, July 23, 2013 6:00 AM

Today is Don't Tax My CU Tuesday, and all credit unions are encouraged to leverage their Twitter accounts, as well as other social media channels, to post as many “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” messages as possible.

Your tweet can be as simple as: "Please #DontTaxMyCU@[twitter handle of your senator here]." Be sure to include in your tweets the hashtag #DontTaxMyCU.

Why is this critical? Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus and Ranking Member Orrin Hatch have asked for input from their colleagues on which tax exemptions should go back onto the "blank sheet" of paper by July 26.

It should come as no surprise then that the American Banking Association (ABA) has galvanized its forces against credit unions and have launched a national action alert urging bankers to contact members of Congress asking for the elimination of the credit union tax exemption.

Here's their message:

"The credit unions are already engaged in an aggressive grassroots campaign to protect their favored tax treatment. They are extending their outreach to employees and credit union members through a variety of distribution channels. It is vital that we advocate more forcefully than ever before."

Due to this reaction, it is critical that we make our credit union voice louder than ever. If our credit unions do nothing, hoping others will take up the gauntlet for all of us, we are allowing the bankers' to determine our fate. We cannot afford to let that happen. We must push even harder now to compete with all the bankers' emails flooding Washington, D.C. offices.

So in addition to asking you to generate contacts via email, phone, and letter, we're ramping up our social media efforts and asking you to help us promote "Don’t Tax My CU Tuesday.”
