Diamond Lakes FCU Hosts 217th Reality Fair
Monday, May 7, 2018 6:55 AM

Diamond Lakes Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Malvern, Ark., sponsored a reality fair for 228 Lake Hamilton High School seniors on May 1, 2018. For the last five years, the credit union has been dedicated to sharing reality fairs in schools within its six-county field of membership.

The Lake Hamilton High School event was the 217th reality fair for Diamond Lakes. Since 2014, approximately 5,500 students have participated in a Diamond Lakes reality fair.

Reality Fair

Reality fair participants are assigned a career, lifestyle, and budget. They experience the reality of budgeting by visiting tables designed to set up their household: housing, transportation, utilities, clothing, food, credit union savings, loans, gym memberships, pets, and electronics. While some tables feature necessities, other tables offer lifestyle choices that can either make or break a family budget.

The environment may be fabricated, but the message is a clear reality: paying bills is something you will do the rest of your life. So why not practice? To help students through this process, budget counseling is available throughout the experience. A reality fair brings fun and budgeting together to offer students a dynamic hands-on experience.

Diamond Lakes offers reality fairs to schools, churches, businesses, and organizations, according to Lorraine Davis, vice president of systems management for the credit union.

“There is no charge for us to bring a reality fair to any venue,” explained Davis. “We just need a large space for the tables and volunteers to work the tabletops. The goal of reality fairs is to teach life skills that will lead to personal financial success.”
