DE Book Drive Project Benefits Don Bosco Special School in Kenya

A team of Credit Union Development Educators (DEs), led by Herb Wegner Award winner and CU Difference founder Lois Kitsch and International Credit Union Development Educator Brent Rempe, are collecting books for the Don Bosco Special School in Likuyani, Kenya, and are requesting donations by Oct. 5. Books and cash are accepted, and no donation is too small.

Don Bosco serves students with physical disabilities who are children of small-scale farmers. DEs nationwide played a significant role in funding a three-classroom addition at Don Bosco, which was completed in July 2018.

Next June, a group of DEs from the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia will spend time serving Don Bosco and establish a library as part of an International DE Workshop hosted by the African Confederation of Credit and Savings Cooperatives (the continental credit union trade association).

If you would like to donate some books for this cause, please note that books should be:

  • New or gently used
  • In English or Swahili
  • Fiction, or nonfiction copyrighted after 2010
  • Hard cover if possible (paperback is acceptable)
  • Provide a non-controversial worldview

Examples of appropriate book categories include:

  • Children’s books
  • Young adult
  • Board books (for early education)
  • Chapter books
