DATCU Reports Receipt of Fictitious Check, Alerts Other CUs
Thursday, June 9, 2016 6:55 AM

Recently, DATCU Credit Union was the target of a spate of counterfeit cashier’s checks. The first encounter was a suspicious cashier's check from a non-member in its Flower Mound, Texas, branch. The individual, who was selling sports equipment online, had received the cashier's check for almost $4,000 by overnight delivery from the buyer, and he wanted to be certain the check was good.

Billy Brothers, from DATCU's compliance department, confirmed the individual's suspicion that the cashier's check was, in fact, fictitious. A report of fraud was filed with the FMPD, and Brothers notified Cornerstone so we could spread the word to other credit unions in case they encountered something equally suspicious.

"We do not currently have anyone on staff that is able to sign checks whose name starts with an R and last name starting with Z, which was the first tip to it being fraudulent," Brothers said.

The particular cashier's check number shows to have been reconciled on May 5, 2016, for $7 payable to the Denton County Tax Office.

"We have since noticed roughly 35 checks that follow suit," Brothers said. "We have been able to return all of them but would like to ensure other institutions stop accepting them without verifying first. These checks all seem to bear the same signature and have been no more than $4,000."

Brothers was adamant that they didn't want other credit unions to take any losses when a heads up from us could help avoid that.
