Dallas Credit Union Holds Reality Fair for Students
Thursday, May 26, 2016 6:50 AM

Dallas CU Reality FairDallas Credit Union announced they held a Reality Fair in partnership with the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) Downtown Dallas' El Centro campus and their Financial Aid Department on May 4.

More than 35 volunteers from El Centro’s Financial Aid Department, the Cornerstone Credit Union League, and Dallas Credit Union (DCU) offered their time and talents to approximately 150 students who had to secure housing, purchase a car, set up utilities, and choose a cell phone plan as part of their participation in the Reality Fair. Students with a variety of majors joined in, ranging from entrepreneurs, doctors, and lawyers, to chefs and graphic designers.

DCCCD is one of DCU’s SEGs, and the El Centro campus is right in their backyard. Rachel Pigman, marketing/business development manager with the credit union, said it just made sense to partner with an important institution to Downtown Dallas.

"Part of DCU’s mission is to enhance the wellbeing of all who attend school in the downtown Dallas community by providing the necessary tools to be financially successful," Pigman said. "We believe that financial education is the first step to achieving those financial goals, and the Reality Fair is a fun way to get students thinking about their financial futures."

Dallas CU Reality FairThe students participating in the fair were surprised at how expensive monthly bills can be, especially for the students who were used to a certain standard while living at home.

“The need for financial education is so vital for our future generations," said Dee Pennington, president/CEO of DCU. "The more these students learn about borrowing money, saving, and other important financial milestones, their confidence begins to soar. They now know they are equipped with the information they need to succeed.”

"The Reality Fair was a hit this time around," Pigman added, "and we are in contact with other DCCCD campus financial aid departments to begin hosting Reality Fairs on a quarterly basis."

The event also had a DJ, games, food, and prizes for the El Centro students.
