Cy-Fair FCU Awards $11,000 in Scholarships to Six Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Students

Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union has announced the winners for this year’s scholarship program, awarding $11,000 in higher education scholarships to six Cypress-Fairbanks ISD high school seniors.

One of the scholarships includes the $3,500 Pattie R. Miller Memorial Scholarship, a full-year paid tuition at Lone Star College. This year’s recipient is Chiamaka Ugbaja of Cypress Lakes High School.

“This scholarship gives me the opportunity to pursue my education and worry less about the costs to achieve my degree,” said Ugbaja. “I look forward to pursuing a degree in information technology.”

Cy-Fair FCU awarded the $1,500 Bi-Lingual Spanish/English Scholarship to Sayra Rodriguez of Jersey Village High School. To qualify, applicants had to be enrolled in an English as a Second Language or New America College English Acquisition class and submit their application essay in both English and Spanish.

"The Cy-fair FCU Bilingual Spanish Scholarship is special because it recognizes me as an ESL student, which is an important aspect of my life and culture,” said Rodriguez. “This scholarship puts me one step closer to achieving my academic goals in the STEM career field.”

In addition, the credit union awarded Shannon Hebert of Cypress Woods High School the $1,500 Membership Scholarship, reserved for an outstanding student who is a Cy-Fair FCU member or has an immediate family member with an account at the credit union.

“Winning the Cy-Fair FCU scholarship is a huge honor. I am eager to begin my freshman year at Louisiana State University where I will study elementary education,” said Hebert. “I have a strong passion for working with children and look forward to making a difference in the lives of our future leaders.”

Cy-Fair FCU also awarded three high school seniors with the credit union’s Community Scholarship of $1,500 each. Recipients are Kaitlyn Clark, Cypress Creek High School; Brandon King, Cypress Ridge High School; and Manish Koleti, Cy-Ranch High School.

In all, the $11,000 in scholarships represent Cy-Fair FCU’s commitment to the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD community and families seeking higher education opportunities for their students.

“We continue to seek impactful ways to invest in our local community and these scholarships reflect our intent to help deserving, outstanding high school seniors reach their higher education goals,” said Cameron Dickey, Cy-Fair FCU’s president and CEO. “These remarkable students represent the best in our Cypress-Fairbanks school community, and we’re excited to see where they go with their education.”

Cy-Fair FCU began its scholarship program in 1992 and has now awarded financial assistance to 196 students totaling $196,000. The scholarship program is open to all Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and Waller ISD students, and funds may be used for tuition at any accredited college, junior college or university.

The scholarship selection process began in March 2018 and is facilitated by an independent, all-volunteer committee comprised of various community leaders. This year’s scholarship committee was tasked with scoring the submitted essays in order to help determine the recipients.
