Credit union honors six scholarship recipients, including first winner of its Bi-Lingual Spanish/English Scholarship

Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union in Houston, Texas, recently hosted a special event to honor the recipients of its 2017 high school scholarship program. Six local students received assistance for higher education as part of the program. Leticia Alanis, of Waller High School, earned the Pattie R. Miller Memorial Scholarship, the credit union’s top award for an outstanding student, which includes a full year of paid tuition and other expenses at Lone Star College.

This year marked the first time the credit union, in partnership with Lone Star College, has awarded a full-tuition scholarship worth up to $3,500 for its top finalist.

“Receiving this scholarship symbolizes that no matter how hard the obstacles seem to be, as a family, we have accomplished a goal, a dream,” said Alanis. “It's a representation of the hard work my mother and sisters have invested in me, and the payoff is knowing my education will be furthering into a successful career. On this journey I have learned that sometimes you have to do something you've never done in order to get something you've never had.”

Two additional new scholarships were also introduced by Cy-Fair FCU this year. To honor the diversity of the local community, the credit union introduced the Bi-Lingual Spanish/English Scholarship. To qualify, a student must be a dual speaker, enrolled in an English as a Second Language or New America College English Acquisition class, and their application essay must be submitted in both English and Spanish. A scholarship for students who are either Cy-Fair FCU members or an immediate relative of a member was also unveiled in 2017.

According to Cy-Fair FCU President and CEO Cameron Dickey, the recent enhancements to the 26-year-old program reflect the credit union’s historic commitments to Cypress-Fairbanks ISD families, the diversity of the local community, and the educational success of Cy-Fair FCU members.

“An important goal of the scholarship program is to help outstanding local students from a variety of backgrounds afford higher education,” said Dickey. “Our 2017 recipients represent a wide cross-section of our community. We’re proud of their accomplishments and wish them future success in all they do.”
