CUs Encouraged to Hold Casual Day on April 2 to Raise Funds for Financial Ed Efforts
Thursday, February 20, 2014 6:50 AM

To kick off National Financial Literacy Month April 2, the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation (Foundation) is encouraging Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas credit unions to participate in a “Financial Fitness Day” fundraiser. This initiative will raise funds for the Foundation, as well as the National Credit Union Foundation. To participate, credit unions can hold either a jeans/casual day for staff; a bake sale, “donate a buck” day, and/or come up with their own creative idea to celebrate Financial Fitness Day.

“Financial Fitness Day is an opportunity to bring awareness to the importance of having the knowledge and skills to make sound financial decisions,” notes Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Courtney Moran.

“The Cornerstone Credit Union League recently conducted a survey of credit union members in our region, and that survey revealed that while 79 percent of survey participants felt it was important to have a household budget, only 5 percent always stick to it,” continues Moran.

Sixty-seven percent of survey participants, Moran points out, indicated that unexpected expenses is the greatest challenge to sticking to a household budget.

“In life, things happen, so when managing a household budget, consumers need to plan for both the expected and unexpected,” adds Moran. “Financial Fitness Day is an opportunity for credit unions to help their members achieve greater financial health.”

Credit unions can learn more about Financial Fitness Day, by visiting financialfitnessday.com. Included on the website are other campaign resources such as additional fundraising ideas, sample newsletter articles, sign-up sheets, stickers, flyer, statement stuffer, wall pin-up templates, sample tweets, web buttons, and more.

Cornerstone credit unions that participate in Financial Fitness Day are asked to notify Moran, so that the Foundation can track and promote credit union participation in our region. If you have any questions, please contact the Foundation, at (800) 953-8283.
