Credit Unions Care

Credit unions are cooperative financial service institutions that exist to serve the members who own them, not to make a profit. They operate by seven cooperative principles, one of which is Concern for Community. While focusing on member needs, credit unions work for the development of their communities through policies and programs accepted by their members.

The Credit Unions Care campaign purpose is to increase visibility and awareness in the communities we serve by illustrating the many ways credit unions give back. Simply put, we want to ensure people understand that credit unions are not only financial partners but community partners; and in that spirit, Credit Unions Care will differentiate credit unions from others in the for-profit sector.

Help for Harvey

As rains continue to fall in the Texas Coastal Communities, floods and flash floods are likely. Shelters are available for those who have been forced out of their homes. YOU can make a difference by donating personal items or making monetary donations.

The quickest way to provide immediate assistance is by making a financial gift.

CU Ride 2017

The dates have been set.  Mark your calendar and join your colleagues as we travel to your Children’s Hospital’s in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas to deliver a treasure trove of stuffed dogs. To be part of the tour, you don't have to ride a motorcycle; you can drive your own vehicle or ride in a vehicle wrapped with your credit union's logo. We simply want to present a united front when we visit each CU Ride destination.

Credit Unions for Kids and Children's Miracle Network

CMNOne of the most notable ways credit unions give back is through their alliance with Credit Unions for Kids and the Children's Miracle Network.

62 children enter a Children's Miracle Network Hospital for treatment every minute. Whether they suffer from common childhood afflictions like asthma and broken bones, or fight bigger challenges like birth defects or cancer, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals provide comfort, treatment and hope to millions of sick kids. In fact, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals treat one in 10 children in North America each year.

Credit Unions for KidsDonate

Credit Unions for Kids is a nonprofit collaboration of credit unions, chapters, leagues/associations and business partners from across the country, engaged in fundraising activities to benefit 170 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Adopted as our movement’s charity of choice, credit unions are the 3rd largest sponsor of CMN Hospitals. Since 2006, CU4Kids has raised $150 million for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

One hundred percent of every dollar donated by members of the credit union movement goes back to the CMN Hospital which serves your community and your members.

CMN Hospitals treat millions of children every year; in fact, it is the world’s largest children’s charity. Each year, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals provide $3.4 billion in charity care supporting cutting edge, life-saving research, and develop new, innovative technology which eases pain and lengthens lives.

Looking at the Numbers, below is the impact of a dollar at your local CMN Hospital

  • $10,000 – Critical Care Crib
  • $8,500 – Two Ventilators
  • $5,000 – Three Pediatric Wheelchairs

Soles for Change

How many of us have a ridiculous amount of shoes we never wear?
How many of us wish we had more closet space?
Luckily, we have a solution!

Soles for ChangeIn a combined effort the Cornerstone Credit Union League and Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation will be collecting new and gently used shoes throughout 2017.  All shoes collected will go to developing nations around the world.

Families in developing countries who receive these shoes are those who have little to no income or livelihood. The ability of donated shoes to be repurposed and sold, represents an opportunity for individual families and their communities to develop micro-businesses within their areas. It is the only possibility for true self-sustainability.

In a nutshell, it works like this:

  1. Organizations and nonprofits collect shoes and work through hub operators to have the shoes delivered in developing nations to micro-entrepreneurs.
  2. Micro-entrepreneurs clean and repair the shoes and re-sell them for a profit.

This micro-enterprise industry represents one of the most effective ways to lift many families out of the extreme poverty in devastated economies.  These micro-entrepreneurs are seeking a hand-up, not a hand-out from poverty.

Together the League, Foundation and Cornerstone Credit Unions are dedicated to helping these micro-entrepreneurs live a better life, while we are helping make a difference in our communities.

Each pair of donated shoes are banded together and placed in a large plastic bag, 25 pair to a bag. The bags of shoes are then delivered to our representative.  For every 100 bags of shoes we donate the Foundation receives $1000.

If you are interested in participating and collecting shoes at your credit union, please contact Staci Zale for more information.
