CUs Asked to Complete CUNA Home Depot Breach Survey
Thursday, October 2, 2014 6:45 AM

Yesterday, Credit Union National Association's President/CEO Jim Nussle sent an email to all affiliated credit unions that offer debit or credit cards asking them to complete a special survey regarding the impact the Home Depot breach has had on your credit union.

The survey can be accessed here.

The move is designed to show Washington that credit unions and their leagues are pulling out all the stops to ensure policymakers and the media know how serious the effects of data breaches are on credit unions. Your league is also asking for your help to deliver this message so we can quantify the breach's impact.

Now that enough time has likely passed for you to assess the impacts of the Home Depot data breach, you may be better able to provide that information to CUNA. Though other data breaches may also be affecting your credit union, please limit your answers to the impact of the Home Depot breach.

Please complete this survey by October 24.

Before completing the survey, you will need to collect the following information:

  • The total number of debit and credit cards your credit union currently has issued to members.
  • The number of cards that were affected by the Home Depot data breach.
  • The number of cards you have reissued or plan to reissue as a result of the breach.
  • Estimates of the costs your credit union has incurred as a result of the breach for:  card reissuance, fraud, and all other costs.

Once the surveys are completed, CUNA will provide estimates of the costs of the breach, by state, just as they did with the Target breach.

Thank you for your participation, and again that survey link is here.
