CUNA to Issue Critical Alert on Tax Status – CUs Encouraged to Hike the Hill
Wednesday, May 15, 2013 6:25 AM

Action is needed NOW to keep our tax exemption.
Members of Congress have found the political will to address comprehensive tax reform that may directly impact credit unions. They have already said everything is on the table and that they will "start with a blank sheet of paper." Those very words have been repeated enough on the Hill to set CUNA, League, and industry leaders on high alert.

Watch for an action alert in the coming days.
Credit unions will be among 400 non-profit organizations, such as AARP and Realtors, who, in the coming weeks, will be advocating for their tax exemptions. Credit unions must ensure that their voices are heard over these other groups. This is why it is essential that all credit union CEOs, volunteers, and staff engage in a nationwide call to action while these policies are being formed.

In addition to staff and volunteers, credit unions must engage and educate their members on the value of the credit union tax exemption, activating the voices not only of those working in the industry, but also those the industry serves. CUNA has established a new website at, focused on defending the tax exemption.

Never a Better Time to Hike the Hill.
The League's upcoming Hike the Hill in Washington, D.C. June 5-7 could not be timelier. A strong showing in Washington will help reinforce our grassroots strength in support of the exemption. In anticipation of heightened interest, we have extended our hotel block until Friday, May 17.
