CUNA's Nussle: We're In It Together

Credit Union National Association President/CEO Jim Nussle visited Cornerstone Credit Union League's Annual Meeting this week to talk about his vision for CUNA and the credit union system.

Nussle is focusing his leadership in four critical areas for credit union success. First, credit unions must lead an interdependent and fierce 360-degree advocacy effort to remove barriers. Credit unions need to be bolder and fiercer to accomplish that.

Second, credit unions need to promote better awareness of the "credit union difference," Nussle said. The idea that just being a credit union will sell itself to consumers doesn't work.

Third, he suggests establishing credit union relevance in the marketplace and providing solutions in a "disruptive" financial service market. "We were the original disruptor back in 1934,

and we can be that again," he said.

Finally, "Growing is winning," he said. Gaining credit union market share will help us gain ground in the financial services marketplace.

"We're in it together," Nussle said. "Delivering interdependent CUNA/League value proposition is something we can only do together."

Nussle painted the picture of a mobilized credit union movement, imagining an interdependent credit union system with CUNA, state, or regional leagues, credit unions, and the more than 105 million members of credit unions working together to affect change. 

Nussle added, “I can move a mountain with three and a half million,” comparing credit union membership with that of the most influential and powerful lobbies in DC, the NRA and the AARP.
