CUNA/League Grassroots Activism Keeps NCUA out of Appropriations
Thursday, September 14, 2017 7:00 AM

The U.S. House of Representatives adopted the League/CUNA-backed Amodei-Aguilar amendment on NCUA by voice vote yesterday. The bipartisan amendment from Reps. Mark Amodei (R-Nev.) and Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) removed a provision placing NCUA under the appropriations process from House appropriations bill HR 3354, which is scheduled for a vote this afternoon.

"This result is thanks to the tour de force that is our highly responsive credit union movement," said Caroline Willard, president/CEO of Cornerstone Credit Union League. "I want to thank everyone who called, emailed, or tweeted their legislators and asked them to back the Amodei-Aguilar amendment. We collectively secured a critical victory for credit unions and, in so doing, saved them from a hidden tax on credit unions and their members."

In his message to credit unions, CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle called the strategy employed to accomplish this feat "the blueprint" of the industry's future advocacy work.

"This ferocious display of credit union advocacy kicked into full force last week when CUNA and the Leagues mapped out a detailed strategy for pushing this measure across the finish line," said Nussle. "Together, we organized a 360-degree plan of fierce advocacy to help connect you—our credit union members—with your lawmakers. Thousands of emails, calls, and social media messages from advocates across the country, in concert with constant pressure from CUNA and the Leagues' professional advocates on the Hill, changed the votes of dozens of lawmakers who were hesitant to vote YES on this measure."
