CUNA Launches StopTheDataBreaches.com
Monday, October 6, 2014 6:50 AM

Credit Union National Association's new "Stop the Data Breaches" campaign is designed to deliver a simple and clear message:  Congress must stop the data breaches by mandating consistent data security standards for merchants.

CUNA President Jim Nussle cites the ever-growing list of merchants who've experienced data security breaches (Target; Home Depot; Michaels; Jimmy Johns; Supervalu; and more) and says it's past time credit unions had a way to hold merchants accountable for the damage their lax systems have allowed.

On Thursday, CUNA distributed information to the leagues and credit unions about a new consumer call to action. CUNA's StopTheDataBreaches.com is a new website where credit union advocates can learn about the issue, take action, and spread the word on social media.

Other resources are on the CUNA Data Breach Toolkit on CUNA's website. These include talking points, email correspondence to members, etc.

Cornerstone Credit Union League encourages credit unions to visit these sites and learn about things we can all do to promote awareness. Since October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, this is a good time to call attention to data breaches through social media and other outreach.
