CUNA GAC Visits to Focus on House Staff and Senators
Monday, November 24, 2014 7:00 AM

Last week it was announced that members of the U.S. House of Representatives will be on recess the week of March 8-12, which coincides with CUNA’s 2015 Governmental Affairs Conference. Regardless, Cornerstone leadership believes that significant work will continue to be accomplished during CUNA GAC.

While many representatives will be back in their districts during our visit to Washington, D.C., the Senate will continue to be in session, and senior legislative staffers will remain in Washington. We feel we can have an equal impact with these audiences as we descend upon Capitol Hill.

“Congressional staff can be just as, if not more, knowledgeable about our issues than their bosses,” says Cornerstone’s Senior Vice President, Advocacy Jim Phelps. “Some staff specializes in financial services, and thus have a better grasp of the nuances of legislation that could impact credit unions. With House members on recess, there will be fewer distractions such as votes or committee hearings, which should translate into more focused and timely meetings.”

For Cornerstone attendees, the 2015 GAC will be the first major advocacy event following the mid-term elections. Among the Cornerstone delegation, there will be two new U.S. senators and six new members of the House. Hill visits at the GAC provide an excellent opportunity to meet with members and staff to discuss credit union issues.

The CUNA GAC attracts more than 4,000 credit union professionals from across the country. Attendees will hear from influential legislators, policymakers, and credit union experts on the political landscape and how it directly affects credit unions.

CUNA has just announced that General Stanley McChrystal, a four-star general and the former commander of U.S. and International Forces in Afghanistan, will be speaking at the opening session.

Cornerstone has secured a block of rooms at the Renaissance Hotel, conveniently located across the street from the Washington Convention Center. To reserve your room or register for the 2015 CUNA GAC, visit Cornerstone’s website at
