CUNA and National CU Foundation Pledge Support to Cornerstone Region Credit Unions
Wednesday, August 30, 2017 6:40 AM

During Tuesday's meeting at the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL) in Chicago, Cornerstone Credit Union League President/CEO Caroline Willard addressed the group about the efforts being made locally and nationwide for credit unions affected by Hurricane Harvey.

In response, CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle issued the following statement:

"Many credit union operations have likely been damaged irreparably, and many credit union professionals have likely lost or been forced to abandon their homes with their families to find safety. To support the many members of our industry who are no doubt grappling with the terrible effects of this catastrophic event, I ask you to please make a donation to the National Credit Union Foundation's CUAid program."

So far, more than $100,000 has been donated to the National Foundation and to Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation to support impacted credit unions, but much is left to do. The road to recovery will be a long and arduous one, likely to stretch on for months and years to come.

Also on Tuesday, Patrick Jury, Credit Union National Association board chair and president/CEO of the Iowa Credit Union League, called on the credit union movement to marshal its resources to help all those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

“When catastrophes strike our communities, credit unions, and their staffs are always there, in the heart of it, selflessly doing whatever they can to aid and support their neighbors, friends, and families,” Jury said on behalf of the full CUNA Board of Directors. “The days to come will no doubt reveal that the disaster to befall the Houston area and areas across the southern coast of the United States will rival some of the most destructive natural disasters our nation has ever experienced. As always, credit unions must—and will—do whatever we can to help.”

CUNA and the National Foundation are coordinating relief efforts with the Cornerstone to provide assistance as necessary and requested. CUNA and the National Foundation also stand ready to expand into states that are in the storm’s path as it continues to move to Louisiana and other areas.
