CULAC Raises Nearly $5.1M for 2015-16 Election Cycle
Monday, January 9, 2017 6:45 AM

The Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), CUNA’s political action committee, broke all previous fundraising records during the 2015-16 cycle, raising $5.092 million. The total, which broke the $5 million mark for the first time, is a 15 percent increase from the 2013-14 election cycle.

“We spent more than $4.9 million on the election, and it was a tremendous success with 97 percent of the more than 364 candidates we supported being elected to the new Congress,” said Trey Hawkins, CUNA’s vice president of political affairs. “It’s a gratifying and exciting achievement to celebrate, and it’s one that would not have been possible without the strong support of our CUNA and league partners, the thousands of credit unions and tens of thousands of credit union employees that helped us raise funds.”

“We want to thank all of our Cornerstone credit unions for recognizing the value of contributing to CULAC,” said Gretchen Ziegler, Cornerstone VP political affairs. “Because of the support of these advocates, we achieved a 100 percent success rate for the credit union-friendly candidates the CULAC money supported in our region.”

CULAC makes direct contributions and independent expenditures to pro-credit union candidates with the goal of ensuring a pro-credit union Congress is elected. The sixth-largest trade association PAC, CULAC giving is split almost exactly 50/50 between Democrats and Republicans, making it one of the most bipartisan PACs in the country.
