CU Members Mortgage President David Motley Speaks at Cornerstone League’s Leadership Conference & Expo
Thursday, August 29, 2013 10:15 AM

Today’s mortgage lending industry is not for the faint hearted.  Looming rules and regulations will test even the strongest financial institutions.  Among those companies that have demonstrated excellence in providing credit unions with compliant, up-to-date programs is CU Members Mortgage.  Its President, David Motley, will be speaking at the upcoming Cornerstone Leadership Conference and Expo in San Antonio, Texas, Sept. 5-7, 2013 on “The Mortgage Future State: Imminent CFPB Regulations and Proposals to Replace Fannie and Freddie.”

Some of the points Motley will address during his talk include:

  • The CFPB released the ability-to-repay standard. How will this affect credit unions and the ability for those borrowers with a credit score below 620 and Total Fixed Payments to Effective Income Ratio exceeding 43 percent?
  • Many regulations that are created conflict with other rules.  How will the White House initiative create a national housing policy coordinator position that will review regulations throughout the government and work with the regulators to ensure that they are presenting one voice behind issues facing the mortgage industry?
  • What’s the possibility for a future uniform state testing implementation for Loan Originators?
  • Economists have predicted since 2011 the recovery is coming.  Has the volume of credit union mortgage loans increased this first half of 2013?  What’s the forecast regarding a rise in first mortgages the second half of 2013?
  • Since interest rates have increased .50 percent, will there be a rush on the housing market to refinance due to the rising interest rates?  Or have most members already done so and refinances will remain flat?
  • Exemptions…including rural definition and small lenders.  How is this potentially a positive for lenders?
  • What can we expect when GSEs (FNMA/GNMA) are phased out and everything moves to the private market?
  • What is market pricing going to be like in the near term (5 years)?
  • What is the status on plans being considered in the House and Senate right now: the Senate's Corker-Warner Bill and the House Financial Services Chairman's Bill known as PATH?

The League’s Leadership Conference and Expo promotes strong leadership for credit unions to drive change, impact results, and get things done. Motley’s talk will focus on major issues in the mortgage lending arena for credit unions.

“Changes are occurring daily in this industry, but I will be focusing primarily on how new rules issued by the CFPB that go into effect in January 2014 will affect credit union mortgage originations,” states Motley.  “I also plan to talk on several of the plans being proposed by legislators and policymakers and how those proposals differ from the current structure. More importantly, we are honored to be a part of this conference to deliver this timely message to credit unions.”
