Credit Union leaders from Firstmark CU, Generations FCU, and Randolph-Brooks FCU recently meet with Texas Speaker of the House Joe Straus. The group thanked the speaker for his support of credit unions over the years. The group discussed activities at their credit unions with the speaker and the upcoming primary elections on March 1, 2016. Speaker Straus is facing two challengers in his primary. The speaker noted the large number of contested primary races around the state for the Texas House and that San Antonio has a lot of contested races for both the House and Senate.

The conversation also included discussion about the Presidential primary races. The speaker was particularly interested in hearing what the credit union leaders thought about the elections and how they thought credit union members were looking at the races. The speaker said he was particularly proud of the work the legislature did to reduce regulation on business and reduce taxes. The budget safety net that the legislature kept in place, despite demands for more spending, showed great forethought on the part of legislative leaders given the dramatic decline in the price of oil.

Speaker Straus indicated that Texas will face many challenges during the next legislature, but he is looking forward to leading the House again in 2017.
