CU Execs Share Best Practices at Chapter Leaders Conference

Credit union executives did what they do best last week at the Cornerstone Credit Union League’s Chapter Leaders Conference in Dallas last week – collaborate. The two-day event is an opportunity for credit union chapter leaders to network, learn best practices and share ideas on how to bring value to local credit unions and positively impact their respective communities via the chapter program.

A highlight of this year’s conference was a best practices panel discussion.  Moderated by Scott Rose, CEO Kelly Community FCU and president of the Tyler Area Chapter of CUs, the panelists included Mark Casares from the Wichita Falls Chapter, Karyn Gonyea from the Central Arkansas Chapter, and Stephen Lark from the Greater Oklahoma Chapter.

Panelists addressed a number of questions, such as what their chapter has accomplished that they are most proud of; significant challenges their chapter faced and ultimately overcame, and where they see their chapter this year and beyond.

Some of the best practices that came out of the panel discussion included:

  • taking the “meeting” out of chapters and focusing instead on chapter “events”
  • Focus on A.C.E. when planning chapter events.  This stands for Advocate, Collaborate and Educate
  • Rotate chapter event responsibility amongst local credit union
  • Involve local credit union Young Professionals (YPs) in chapter board governance
  • Focus on “quality vs. quantity” when developing a chapter plan – this may require changing the meeting schedule from monthly to quarterly
