Credit Union’s Nonprofit Fiesta Medal Takes First Place

Firstmark FCU First Place Medal

Benefit Raises over $2,000 for Children’s Hospital of San Antonio

In their annual contest, the San Antonio Express News selected Firstmark's 2016 Credit Unions for Kids (CUFK) Fiesta medal as the winner in the nonprofit category. More than 300 medals were submitted to compete for top honors in 20 categories for both individuals and organizations.

“Firstmark is excited to have the winning design and see the incredible response to the medal,” said Wendy Bryant-Beswick, SVP/CMO of Firstmark Credit Union. “Most importantly, we are pleased to make this donation to Children’s Hospital of San Antonio through CUFK.”

Donna Prado, senior graphics designer at Firstmark, conceived the design after touring the emergency room at the Children's Hospital of San Antonio. Seeing a giraffe painted on the long arm of a piece of operating room equipment, Prado was moved by the sense of comfort the giraffe provided sick and injured children. She reinterpreted that image in her medal design of a cartoon giraffe hugging an oversized heart.

The design was a hit with credit union members as well as the public. All 810 medals sold within a week, raising just over $2,000. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to CUFK to benefit the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

Medals are an integral part of San Antonio’s annual Fiesta celebration, which runs for 11 days during April and features dozens of events that raise money for local charities. Fiesta royalty, nonprofit organizations, area businesses, local officials, and even individuals create, buy, sell, and trade the medals worn throughout the event.

Firstmark raises funds for CUFK through a variety of fundraising activities. CUFK partners with the Children's Miracle Network, a nonprofit organization that works to increase awareness of children's health issues, as well as raise funds for children's hospitals and medical research.
