Cornerstone Promotes Phelps to SVP of Advocacy
Thursday, November 13, 2014 7:00 AM

Jim Phelps

In meetings with credit union leadership during the past 11 years, Jim Phelps has consistently communicated the need for involvement in grassroots efforts that engage our elected officials. Phelps enthusiastically shares credit union leaders' stories where the in-district relationships with legislators provide the foundation for getting things done at the capitol.

It's this type of passion and commitment to serving credit unions—growing the relationships between those active in the credit union movement and those who can have a direct impact on it through legislation—that has resulted in Phelps' promotion to senior vice president for the Cornerstone Credit Union League. As SVP, Phelps will oversee the operations of Cornerstone's legislative advocacy divisions:  Arkansas Credit Union Association, the Oklahoma Credit Union Association, and the Texas Credit Union Association.

Phelps joined the Texas Credit Union League in 2004 after a decade in the financial services industry. He began his tenure as a league representative, helping to facilitate credit union successes while gaining expertise and in-depth knowledge of credit unions through his daily visits with members.

Phelps is responsible for training credit union personnel in advocacy and grassroots involvement locally, in the state capitals, and in Washington, DC; monitoring state and federal elections; and encouraging participation in the Cornerstone initiatives that help create an effective partnership between the regional trade association and its more than 560 member credit unions.

He is responsible for managing Cornerstone’s chapter program, ensuring a strong and active presence throughout the region; and he is the main architect of the highly successful CU: ROAR grassroots advocacy program (Credit Unions: Ready, Organize, Activate, and Respond), which currently has more than 100 credit unions and chapters participating.

"Jim Phelps is the right person for the job," says Cornerstone CEO Richard Ensweiler. "He has demonstrated his commitment to credit union advocacy and has proven his ability to lead, having served as the interim leader of the advocacy team over the past seven months. Jim has been the fuel in a smooth-running advocacy engine since we formed Cornerstone 16 months ago."

Phelps is a graduate of Northern Illinois University and has earned his Certified Association Executive designation.
