Cornerstone Launches ADA Website Accessibility Advocacy Page
Friday, January 12, 2018 7:00 AM

Some credit unions in the Cornerstone region have received threatening demand letters from lawyers claiming the credit union’s website violates the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Therefore, all credit unions must step up their efforts to protect themselves from predatory litigators seeking to profit from the ambiguities in the ADA's website accessibility requirements.

To help address this problem, Cornerstone has launched a new compliance resource page specifically to address the ADA rules for credit union websites. Member credit unions may access the password-protected site here.

"To date, credit unions have made their physical branches accessible, including ATMs; however, some credit unions have overlooked their websites," said Cornerstone SVP Regulatory Compliance Counsel Suzanne Yashewski. "In light of the frivolous litigation being attempted now, which could threaten a credit union's service to its members, credit unions must take a proactive approach to prevent opportunists from capitalizing on the ADA law's vagaries. While we work toward establishing permanent solutions, the ADA website compliance page should offer some good direction and resources."

ADA Webinar for Member Credit Unions
Please also note that Cornerstone is offering a special one-hour webinar next Thursday, Jan. 18, from 10 to 11 a.m. (CT), with Cornerstone SVP Regulatory Compliance Counsel Suzanne Yashewski.

Free to Cornerstone members, this webinar will include an overview of the law and an update regarding the current status of related lawsuits. Participants will also be given an opportunity to engage with their peers when the lines open for discussion.

Although this webinar is a dues-supported service for Cornerstone members, you must register to attend.
