The Cornerstone Credit Union League hosted an orientation yesterday in San Antonio, Texas, for 12 credit union executives from Sicredi, a leading financial cooperative group in Brazil, and nine San Antonio credit unions who will be hosting the interns this month.

The Sicredi interns will spend the next few weeks learning about the U.S. credit union system. The group of 12 mid- and upper-management staff was carefully chosen to participate in this customized and targeted learning experience – a key initiative of the World Council of Credit Unions’ international partnership program between the Cornerstone Credit Union League and Sicredi.

The delegates will attend the Cornerstone Credit Union League’s Leadership Conference & Expo, which kicks off today and continues through Saturday. Afterwards, they will be split up into three groups and “shadow” staff at host credit unions to garner a deeper and expansive knowledge of how credit unions in the U.S. operate. Host credit unions include:

  • Alamo FCU
  • Generations FCU
  • River City FCU
  • Select FCU
  • San Antonio FCU
  • Security Service FCU
  • St. Joseph’s CU
  • Texas Workforce CU
  • United SA CU

“The partnership between Cornerstone and Sicredi is a great example of the collaboration within our industry,” says Victor Corro, the World Council of Credit Union’s vice president, Worldwide Foundation. “It truly knows no national borders.  It’s always very exciting to see these professional exchanges, especially when they involve young credit union professional. They are the future of credit unions.”

Sicredi groupSince signing the partnership in 2010, Sicredi has sent delegates to the Cornerstone region on several different occasions, including their October 2013 visit, where they interned at credit unions in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas.  Over the course of that three-week internship, the Sicredi delegates learned about governance, economic empowerment, technology, risk management, and social responsibility.

Additionally, a group of seven credit union executives from the Cornerstone region participated in a two-week internship in Brazil earlier this year.

The Sicredi delegates for the September 2014 internship include:

  • Flavio Silva de Araujo
  • Willian Rafael Vianna Bonin
  • Michelli Regina Davóglio
  • Suzane de Almeida
  • Lucas Barbosa Fedel
  • Ezequiel Fuhr
  • Geovane Martini
  • Eduardo Mireski
  • Simone Felber Morales
  • Elisabeth Nikolofski
  • Adriana Turatto Salla
  • Walter Luiz Silva

Sicredi is one the major cooperative systems in Latin America, and is distributed in 10 Brazilian states. To fully meet needs of members, Sicredi credit cooperatives are structured regionally into offices and receive strategic and technical expertise of Sicredi Confederation, Sicredi Cooperative Bank, Sicredi Credit Foundation and their holding company, which is the entity responsible for determining among other things compliance ethics and audit policies.  Sicredi has a unified brand, as well as standardized policies, procedures and bylaws.  Despite their shared identity, every Sicredi cooperative is still a unique and local institution, just credit unions in the U.S.
