Friday, August 26, 2016 7:00 AM

Cornerstone Legislative SummitThe Cornerstone Advocacy Department and Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC) met in Houston Aug. 15-16 to conduct their biennial Legislative Summit. The Summit is conducted to determine the state and federal legislative priorities for Cornerstone credit unions.

Kirk Cuevas from Dollar Associates LLC served as the facilitator, and the agenda included a report on results from the 2016 Advocacy Survey; a federal legislative update; a report on highlights from the Cornerstone state legislative sessions; and an election analysis by Dr. Keith Gaddie, professor of political science at the University of Oklahoma.

Summit attendees also discussed ideas for greater political engagement and the challenges facing credit unions at state and federal levels. Issues that emerged as most important for Cornerstone credit unions were regulatory relief, data security, and protecting the tax exemption, as well as concern about future rules from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Cornerstone Legislative SummitThe attendees also discussed how credit union members can support grassroots campaigns via the Member Activation Program (MAP) and Texas the Voter Match Program.

“The GAC members conducted a very effective Summit that honed in on the legislative concerns most important to credit unions and generated new ideas for grassroots activation,” said Jim Phelps, SVP of advocacy. “Their recommendations will serve as the basis for Cornerstone’s state and federal advocacy efforts during the 2017 state legislative sessions and in the new Congress."

The legislative recommendations developed by the GAC will be soon be presented to the Cornerstone board of directors for approval.
