Stephens served on the board of the Texas Credit Union League (now Cornerstone) and was very active in the Houston Chapter of Credit Unions as well as the National Association of Community Development Credit Unions.

Along with Stephens, additional 2016 inductees include Paddy Bailey and Pete Crear, both former presidents of the World Council of Credit Unions; Shreveport Federal Credit Union Chairman Dr. Birdex Copeland; and, posthumously, Annie Wilma Vamper who dedicated 37 years to the credit union movement.

Inductees will be honored Tuesday, Feb. 23, during a reception at the Marriott Marquis Liberty Ballroom in Washington, DC.

"I am very proud of our dear friend Barbara Stephens," said Dick Ensweiler, CEO of the Cornerstone Credit Union League. "Only the most accomplished individuals held in the greatest esteem are inducted to the Hall of Fame, and I congratulate her on this well-deserved honor from the African American Credit Union Coalition."

The African American Credit Union Hall of Fame was developed by Helen Godfrey Smith, a founding board member of the African American Credit Union Coalition, a nonprofit organization of African-American professionals and volunteers in the credit union industry. The Hall of Fame honors the valuable contributions, commitment, and sacrifice of African American trailblazers. This is only the second year the Hall of Fame has been in existence.
