Cornerstone Chapters Celebrate International Credit Union Day
Wednesday, October 14, 2015 7:00 AM

The Cornerstone Chapters program has some of the most active and enthusiastic members of our credit union family that you'll ever find. In honor of tomorrow's International Credit Union Day celebration, we thought it would be fun to see what chapters and credit unions around the region are planning for this auspicious day.

The Central Arkansas Chapter is having its annual CULAC Fundraiser, in conjunction with International Credit Union Day, at the North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce.

Casino Night! The event will feature door prizes and silent auction items donated by Central Arkansas Chapter credit unions and vendors.

They typically hold the event for credit union employees and board members only, but this year they've opened up the festivities and welcome all Arkansas credit unions to join them in celebrating of ICU Day.

The Fort Worth Chapter of Credit Unions is holding its fourth annual Chili Cook-Off benefiting TCCUL PAC at Rahr Brewery. The chapter invites all credit unions to come out and enjoy the chili tasting, cake auctions, and lots of door prizes.

Organizers say they typically see have around 15 chili entries, and more than 100 people attend. A blind judging contest takes place during the event for winners of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place People's Choice Awards.

The People's Choice Awards votes are $1 per vote, so the cook with the most money (votes) wins. This is a fun and tasty event for all.

Each October, during International Credit Union month, the Houston Chapter hosts a bake sale to raise money for the TCCUL PAC. Last year, the bake sale resulted in a $10,000 contribution to the PAC.

This year, the event will again be held at the Cadillac Bar and Grill at Sheppard and I-10 in Houston (social at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and auction at 6:30 p.m.). Chapter Board Director Dennis Y’Barbo from Texas Bay Credit Union will be this year’s auctioneer, with the goal of exceeding last year’s results.

Members Choice Credit Union President and CEO Steve Gilman said, “It is time again for our annual Houston Chapter PAC Bake Sale. It’s a high-energy evening of fun and fellowship when we can raise funds for our political advocacy efforts while enjoying wonderful home-made bake goods. Please join us if you can.”

Annually, on International Credit Union Day, the Tyler Area Credit Union Chapter sponsors a Community Shred Day. To save costs, participating credit unions rotate hosting duties. This year’s location sponsor is Kelly Community Federal Credit Union, Grande Branch, and the event will take place Oct. 15 from noon to 5 p.m.

This year's theme, "People Helping People," emphasizes credit unions' positive impact in their communities and around the world. The chapter’s Community Shred Day event will display this message to show the force of credit unions uniting under the chapters umbrella. The event is open not only to members, but the entire community, whether they're credit union members or not.

Participating credit unions include Cooperative Teachers Credit Union, Kelly Community Federal Credit Union, Keystone Credit Union, Tel-Co Plus Credit Union, United Credit Union, and United Heritage Credit Union.

Kelly Community Marketing Director Alyssa Hankins said, "Last year was such a success, we had to get another truck because the initial one got full. As a cooperative, it is our desire to serve the community we are a part of, and this is one way we do just that."

In addition, Cornerstone Credit Union League will launch their “CU Ride Event” from the Kelly Community parking lot to the Trinity Mother Frances Children's Hospital. CU Ride is an event where credit union members, board of directors, volunteers, and staff deliver stuffed animal dogs to Children's Miracle Network hospitals.

The chapter asked for a $250 buy-in from each participating credit union, as well as at least two volunteers the day of the event. The buy-in covers the cost of venue permits, the shred truck, T-shirts for volunteers, two CU items for the “swag bags,” and each credit union’s name on all print advertising and promotional pieces.

Hankins expressed excitement about the terrific response they've seen from credit unions and said they look forward to standing alongside their peers in the credit union movement.

We can't wait to see the results!

We hope you're doing some special things in your credit unions too. We'd love to hear all about it. Send your stories to, and include photos if you have them.

Happy International Credit Union Day!
