Rotary Reality Fair

The Rotary’s Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is an annual event comprised of week-long camps for students between their junior and senior years in high school. It is separated into a boys’ camp and a girls’ camp with Rotary counselors in each, and it is sponsored by Rotary clubs in West Texas and New Mexico.

This year financial literacy was recognized as a key component in preparing these young people for their futures. Consistent with Cornerstone’s commitment to financial literacy, two representatives delivered related messages to 200 campers.

Bob Peterson, CEO at One Source FCU in El Paso, did a financial literacy presentation with the boys on July 13, and Paula Upchurch, league representative from Houston, conducted a reality fair with the girls on July 19.

These presentations were funded and otherwise supported by the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation, the Cornerstone Credit Union League, and One Source FCU. Peterson, a Rotarian with the Rotary Club of West El Paso, said, “To reach this group of bright young people is a real treat and privilege, and it’s truly an uplifting experience for the campers as well as us as presenters. The dialog and feedback were stimulating and really indicative of the interest of our young people in the subject of financial literacy.”
