MemberSource Credit Union President/CEO Kenny Harrington issued a challenge to his staff earlier this year:  start a community outreach program from scratch and get involved in projects that positively impact the quality of life for those living and working in the communities closest to the credit union's locations. So they did, and the spirit of people helping people caught fire with the staff and spread.

In March, MSCU staff collected well over 100 items of work-appropriate clothing, shoes, and accessories for women entering the job market and donated them to Houston's Dress for Success Annual Suit Drive.

When the recent heavy rains ravaged many neighborhoods around Houston, the staff collected 4-5 large boxes of food and hygiene items to help victims get through the recovery process and donated them to Houston's Precinct 1 for distribution.

Most recently, the staff members volunteered their time to serve at West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) where they packaged bags of rice, beans, and other staples. Some staff assisted WHAM's clients with grocery shopping in the pantry while others helped in WHAM's popular Second Blessings Resale Shop.

"It's our responsibility as a good corporate citizen to help others in our surrounding communities of residence and work by sharing knowledge and creating solutions," Harrington said. "By giving employees time during the workday to serve in the community, we can support local programs without it becoming a hardship."

MSCU is also co-branding their community outreach efforts by partnering with Credit Unions Care, making it difficult to miss volunteers when they wear the bright red t-shirts. MSCU's logo shares the back of the t-shirt with the CUs Care logo.
