Coastal Community's Annual Back2School Bash Joins with CUs Care

Coastal Community Federal Credit Union is known for its annual Back2School Bash, which this year is on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 3–5 p.m. Children and families have shown up for the event every year since 2006. This year, the staff and volunteers will wear Credit Unions Care T-shirts during the event, just as they do every Friday while the campaign runs.

The event is a huge draw in the community, and the credit union gives 500 students a head start on school supplies, immunizations, and eye screening.

Coastal Community FCU President and CEO Carol Gaylord said the credit union started the Back2School Bash in 2006, and each year, the demand for backpacks grows.

During the Back2School Bash, free vaccines are provided to qualifying children for the Texas Vaccine for Children Program, which is administered by Teen Health Clinic. Eye screening is provided by The Lions Club, and other vendors include The Children's Center, Safe Place, Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, Blue Santa, and Rosenberg Library.

Activities during the event include a video game truck, waterslide, moonwalk, obstacle course, snow cones, and more. Hot dogs are provided by Ron Carter.

Coastal Community will give away free school supplies, while supplies last. If children open a Kirby Kangaroo Club or CU Succeed account, they receive a free upgraded backpack.

For Gaylord and her staff, this event is a highlight of the year. “Being able to give back to the community and touch people’s lives is such a rewarding experience,” she has said. “It just feels wonderful to make a difference and give families a hand up when they need it the most.”
