Coastal Community Federal Credit Union (CCFCU) is gathering for its sixth annual outing to defeat breast cancer. They'll be raising funds and participating in the D'Feet Breast Cancer Celebration of Life events—the 5K and 10K Runs, 10K Walk, and 1K 4 Kids—on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Moody Gardens on Galveston Island, Texas.

The fundraiser promotes early detection awareness and education, and provides free screening mammograms and free diagnostics to uninsured and underserved Galveston Women ages 40-64, as well as those at high risk for breast cancer.

CCFCU President/CEO Carol Gaylord called the D'Feet Walk one of her credit union's favorite outreach programs. Last year, she noted that the walk was more personal for her since her mother was receiving treatment for cancer during that time, after being diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2014.

"We just celebrated Mom’s 78 Birthday this weekend," Gaylord said. "She has completed her chemo and radiation therapy and is doing great. She is traveling and enjoying her newfound life, and she reminds me of an ungrounded teenager. I know in my heart and soul that she is cancer free; but she will not know for sure until the PET scan in December."

Gaylord adds, "This year, 18 CCFCU employees and I will walk and continue our outreach for her and other women whose breast cancer experience has drawn us in-reach of a cure."
