On Dec. 10, the Coastal Bend Chapter of Credit Unions hosted their end-of-the-year Chapter Dinner with a bang that could have been heard as far as the North Pole. The Chapter board members were festively dressed in their red Credit Union Cares T-shirts and cheerful holiday hats.

They started the evening at the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina with their first-ever CU Young Professionals YP Mix and Jingle. Thirty-one young professionals were in attendance for the networking event, and each individual was issued a certificate for their attendance as well as "one free admittance" for a Chapter dinner or lunch meeting in 2016. What a great way to entice the young professionals to get more involved with the Chapter in the New Year.

Following the YP Mix and Jingle, the Chapter hosted their Annual Toys for Tots Drive. More than 85 credit union employees were in attendance, and the Chapter raised two sleigh loads full of toys. Three members of the Marine Corps Reserve were present, decked out in their dress blues, to address the crowd with their humble appreciation as they gathered the toys up to be delivered to young children in need. With the number of toys gathered, even Santa would have a hard time delivering them all before Christmas.

Michelle Coward, director of risk management for Navy Army Community CU, gave an enlightening fraud update on the latest scams that are occurring in today’s market. She also gave examples of fraudulent activities to be on the lookout for during the holiday season.

The evening’s entertainment was themed “Credit Union’s Got Talent” and was a performance that, along with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, went down in history.

The line-up of star performers included:

  1. A heartwarming a cappella performance of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” sung by Luther Sanchez at Suntide CU.
  2. A beautiful performance of “Silent Night,” sung by Megan Chapa with Suntide CU, accompanied by her friend on the guitar.
  3. A hilarious and creative rendition of “The 12 Days of Christmas, My Member Said to Me” sung by six employees of one credit union, that we fondly refer to as the Coastal Community and Teachers CU Choir, featuring Missy Garcia, Rosie Botello, Vanessa Martinez-Garza, Pamela Avalos, Stephanie Brown, and Yvonne Mendoza.
  4. An outstanding and moving gospel performance of “Light of the World,” sung by Stephanie Prado with Coastal Community and Teachers CU, accompanied by background music.
  5. A final and fun performance of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” sung by the Coastal Bend Chapter board members.

The evening concluded with the drawing of raffle tickets and an announcement that the Chapter had been awarded $136 from Credit Union Resources profile campaign in which employees of all credit unions were encouraged to update their user profiles on the Cornerstone website. The campaign promised to give $1 per profile update to each chapter. Credit Union Resources surprised the chapters, Santa style, by doubling their initial offering and giving $2 per profile update to every chapter.

In true Christmas spirit, the Chapter board announced that the $136 earned by Coastal Bend Chapter of Credit Unions is being generously donated to TCCULPAC.

Finally, all credit unions and employees were encouraged to order their own red Credit Union Cares T-shirts, to sign up as a volunteer for their January CU4 Reality Fair, and to continue spreading credit union cheer in the Corpus Christi community throughout 2016.

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!
