Thursday, December 22, 2016 7:00 AM

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Credit Unions for Kids on Wednesday announced the five winners of the 2016 “Vote for Miracles” promotion, which many credit union staff from the Cornerstone region participated in. Over the course of 22 days, almost 300,000 votes were cast for 141 CMN Hospitals. In addition, members representing more than 2,500 credit unions cast votes during the campaign.

Walking away with the top prize of $50,000 with 43,375 votes was Hurley Children’s Hospital in Flint, Mich. The funds will go directly toward the hospital's new Pediatric Private Patient Rooms initiative.  Once the project is completed, Credit Unions for Kids and CO-OP Financial Services will be recognized with a plaque commemorating the gift.

“We are so appreciative of all that credit unions have done for Hurley Children’s Hospital over the years,” said Melany Gavulic, president and CEO, Hurley Medical Center. “We are delighted that we could use Vote for Miracles to not only raise much-needed funds for our hospital but also tell the amazing story of the credit unions’ generosity through the Credit Unions for Kids program.”

Making the win even sweeter was an additional $10,000 gift on behalf of Dr. Alan Klein, a pediatric dentist on staff at Hurley.

Finishing in second place with 37,494 votes and winner of $20,000, was Mercy Health - Children’s Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.

“On behalf of Mercy Health – Children’s Hospital, we are so thankful to all our patients, employees, credit unions and the community at large who came out to vote,” remarked Barb Dianda-Martin, administrator for Mercy Health – Children’s Hospital. “This gift of $20,000 will allow us to enhance programs and services for our children and their families as well as purchase additional equipment as needed.”

El Paso Children’s in El Paso, Texas, made third place with 24,622 votes, for which they were awarded $15,000.

Fourth place went to Children’s Hospital–New Orleans with 20,664 votes, for which they were awarded $10,000. Fifth place went to Children’s Hospital of Georgia in Augusta, which rallied late in the game to finish with 18,068 votes and earned $5,000.

“The Vote for Miracles has been a great way to culminate the celebration of the Credit Unions for Kids 20th Anniversary,” said John Lauck, president and CEO, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. “It has allowed us to share our story with a large audience while saluting our credit union partners for two decades of incredible support.”

Designed to engage consumers, #VoteForMiracles saw more than 100,000 people cast votes during the three-week campaign. Also during the voting process, voters were asked to “Choose their Credit Union.” The credit unions that generated the most votes for the winning hospitals will be announced at a later date and will be invited to participate in the check presentation at their respective hospital in January.
