TCUL’s Texas GAC and Member Meeting & Expo wrapped on a high note, as closing presenter Steve Gilliland delivered a powerful message on purpose, passion and pride.  A master storyteller, Gilliland drew laughter, and tears, from the credit union audience as he shared how his life experiences have shaped him personally and professionally.

During his enlightening presentation, Gilliland divulged how his divorce brought him to his knees.  Feeling almost paralyzed by anger, fear and hurt, Gilliland shared the inspirational words his mother said to him moments before he was to board a flight for a business trip.

“Divorce can make you bitter or better.  It can make you weaker or stronger,” Gilliland recalls his mother saying to him.

While on the flight, Gilliland struggled to keep it together, and a compassionate flight attendant offered him comfort and encouragement.  Gilliland encountered this flight attendant many years later and he is married to her today.

From his mother, the flight attendant and his executive secretary, Gilliland learned to “enjoy the ride” and he has incorporated that concept into his personal and professional life.

Gilliland’s engaging presentation was laced with anecdotes and best practices.  He divulged how some companies both small and large have created an overall sense of teamwork in their organization.

According to Gilliland, cooperation among employees is either an intricate part of the workplace culture or the missing piece that keeps organizations from fulfilling their true missions and visions.  “One person can change the culture in an organization,” he told conference attendees.

In this distinctive presentation, Gilliland closed by explaining that purpose is what drives you; passion is what fuels you, and pride is what defines you.
