U.S. Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) paid a visit Friday to Cherokee Strip Credit Union in Ponca City.

Oklahoma’s junior senator spent time visiting with members, staff, and volunteers to discuss the current state of affairs on Capitol Hill and several issues important to credit unions. Among the topics of discussion was last week’s Senate vote to repeal the CFPB’s arbitration rule.

Lankford said the rule was another example of the bureau’s practice of painting all financial institutions with the same broad brush. “Credit unions never should have been included in the first place,” he said.

Nate Webb, president of the Oklahoma Credit Union Association said the senator’s visit was a perfect example of why it is important to forge strong relationships and open lines of communications with elected officials and regulators.

“During his time in Washington, Sen. Lankford has earned a reputation as a thoughtful and deliberate legislator," Webb said. "He doesn’t make decisions lightly and studies all sides of an issue before adopting a position. He is a case study on the importance of establishing trust and an open dialogue with those who determine the very future of the credit union movement."
