Chapter Leaders Conference Attendees Have Opportunity to Volunteer at CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fair
Friday, December 13, 2013 6:35 AM

On Jan. 24, attendees at the Cornerstone Credit Union League’s Chapter Leaders Conference will have an opportunity to volunteer at a CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fair that will be held at W.T. White High School in Dallas, from 1-4 p.m. Cornerstone is collaborating with Dallas FCU to hold this fair, which is expected to reach about 50 students. A larger fair is expected to be held at the school at a later date.

The CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fair gives students an opportunity to see how career selection impacts their financial well-being and their life choices.  Through this simulated real-world environment, participants will create a spending plan based on a salary and juggle needs versus wants to make sure they are living within their means.

As students go through the fair, they will meet with representatives of auto dealerships, realtors, lenders, utility providers, retailers and others to help them understand the real expenses they will face in adulthood and the choices they’ll need to make to avoid falling into debt.  The exercise reinforces the importance of sound money management and brings students one step closer to the types of financial pitfalls they may encounter in the “real world.”

Although Chapter Leaders Conference attendees are not required to participate in the CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fair, Jim Phelps, CAE, vice president of Advocacy with Cornerstone, is encouraging their participation.

“Students will walk away from the fair more knowledgeable and more empowered to make smarter financial choices, and those that volunteer at the fair will have the satisfaction of knowing they’ve made a positive impact in the lives of our young people,” said Phelps.

Cornerstone’s Chapter Leaders Conference is Jan. 23-24, 2014 in Dallas, and online registration will be available next week. This will be the first Chapter conference to include Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas chapters. The theme for this year’s event is “Cornerstone Chapters – Better Together.”

This annual conference is an opportunity for credit union chapter leaders to network, learn best practices and share ideas on how to bring value to local credit unions and positively impact their respective communities via the chapter program.

Some of the program highlights include:

  • Discussion of chapters post Cornerstone-consolidation;
  • Chapters and advocacy featuring a local lawmaker and staffer;
  • Best practices with Chapter Presidents and League contacts from other states;
  • Fun offsite networking event Thursday evening

Please note that Cornerstone will reimburse travel and cover one night's lodging expense (room & tax only) for up to two designated representatives from each Chapter. If you have any questions, please contact Phelps, at
