Thursday, August 25, 2016 7:00 AM

Jeff Huffman of Texas CU Association; Gary Janacek of Scott & White Employees CU; Howard Baker and Rachel Fausett of Greater Texas FCU; Congressman John Carter; Cornerstone's Charlotte Spencer; Paul Trylko of Amplify FCU; and Jason McGee and Tony Budet of University FCU.

Taking advantage of the congressional recess, leaders from credit unions in Austin and Temple, Texas, recently met with U.S. Rep. John Carter (R-Texas, District 31).

The group included Tony Budet, CEO of University Federal Credit Union; Jason McGee of UFCU and president of the Austin Chapter of Credit Unions; Paul Trylko, CEO of Amplify FCU; Gary Janacek, CEO of Scott & White Employees CU; and Howard Baker and Rachel Fausett of Greater Texas FCU.

Credit union leaders thanked Rep. Carter for his support of H.R.3048, the Community Financial Institution Exemption Act, which would exempt credit unions under $10 billion in total assets from CFPB rules moving forward.

They also discussed the need for H.R.2205, the Data Security Act of 2015, which would establish a process for merchants to secure credit and debit card data, requiring merchants to disclose when a breach occurs. Losses and costs for credit unions due to data security breaches continue to grow with every new breach.

Rep. Carter is interested in making vocational education more accessible to those who are interested in professions that do not require a college education, and he discussed with the group how credit unions might assist him in that endeavor.
