Cornerstone SVP Credit Union Relations Mike Delker presents Allegiance Credit Union's Carol Gill with the HR Professional of the Year award at the 2017 HR Conference in Fort Worth.

Cornerstone Credit Union League has named Carol Gill, SVP HR and training for Allegiance Credit Union, as the 2017 HR Professional of the Year.

The HR Professional of the Year award recognizes individual outstanding achievements and contributions in the advancement human resources within the credit union movement. The award was presented to Gill Aug. 8 during the annual HR Conference in Fort Worth.

Gill plays an integral role on the management team at Allegiance, which allows her to align her work, projects, and goals with the needs of the credit union. She has updated the company's training program to help employees develop skills to enhance their job knowledge and performance—a win for not only the employees but also the credit union.

Lynette Leonard, president and CEO of Allegiance, said Gill holds herself to the highest standards in serving the interests of the credit union and its employees. "Her servant heart makes her an invaluable advocate on behalf of the individual employee, while at the same time she balances the responsibility of protecting the credit union and advancing the overall goals set by management," Leonard said.

Gill has worked for the Oklahoma City-based, $261 million credit union for 15 years. As an employee advocate, her expertise allows her to foster an environment that encourages employee motivation, contributions, and productivity.

Carol Gill"I do believe this is where I am most passionate," Gill says. "Employees are the backbone of our credit union, and I truly believe we have created a culture of engagement and empowerment that leads to a higher level of retention, service, and fun."

For example, all new hires at Allegiance meet with each member of management, which allows the employee to become more familiar with the team that runs the credit union. It’s an opportunity for both manager and new hire to get acquainted.

Gill notes that everything management changes will have positive and negative effects somewhere. "Therefore, we initiate committees to obtain various insights, viewpoints, embracing diverse thoughts and solutions," Gill says. "An example is, we encourage our employees to team up with a co-worker from a different department to understand the impact of decisions within the credit union as a whole."

Gill is an active member of the Cornerstone HR Council and is often contacted by other credit union professionals, both inside the credit union and outside, for advice.

On her award, Gill said, "Receiving this award from the Cornerstone Credit Union League and from the HR professionals that I admire so much is very special. I cherish the relationships that I have made with these outstanding professionals who helped develop my knowledge and passion in our field. I have received support, inspiration, and friendships that will last a lifetime. I am grateful, humbled, and honored."

Cornerstone Credit Union League extends its sincere congratulations to Carol Gill as the recipient of the 2017 HR Professional of the Year award.
