Call to Action: NCUA Needs to Hear from You
Wednesday, March 26, 2014 6:50 AM

The Cornerstone Credit Union League is encouraging credit unions to act now. The National Credit Union Administration’s (NCUA) new risk-based capital proposal—the most detrimental and wide-reaching regulation in years–will restructure prompt corrective action to include a capital-to-risk assets ratio requiring higher capital. This proposal affects credit unions with concentrations in real estate, CUSOs, MBLs, mortgage servicing assets, and more. Is that your credit union? Or will it be your credit union in a few short years? Cornerstone is urging credit unions to submit their comment letter before May 28, 2014.

Action needed:

  1. Determine if you are affected. Although the proposal only affects credit unions with more than $50 million in assets, most credit unions above $40 million in assets will be above $50 million in just a few years so many more will be affected. Even if you remain well capitalized under the proposed plan, how much cushion will you lose? Even if you don’t currently engage in the activities affected by the new weighting, how might your activities change in the future?
  2. Determine how you are affected. CUNA’s Risk-Based Capital Calculator lets credit unions change their mix of assets to see what the future might look like under the proposal. NCUA’s calculator provides a limited view of where your credit union stands right now.
  3. Take action by sending comment letters by the May 28 deadline. Tell NCUA how this proposal will affect your credit union and how you serve your members. (Scroll down for details on submitting letters.)

Credit unions may submit comments in any of the following ways:

  • Emailregcomments@ncua.gov.  Include the following in the subject line: “[Your Name] Comments on Proposed Rule regarding Risk-Based Capital.”
  • Mail: Gerard Poliquin, Secretary of the Board, National Credit Union Administration, 1775 Duke Street, Alexandria VA 22314-3428
  • Fax: (703) 518-6319

Please be sure and submit your comments as soon as possible, but no later than May 28, 2014. To view already submitted comments, click here. Please remember to share your comments with Cornerstone by emailing them to Suzanne Yashewski, at syashewski@cornerstoneleague.coop.
