Brazosport Teachers Reality Fair
Staff from BTFCU, Cornerstone Credit Union League, and Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation visit with a group of students attending the reality fair.

As part of Brazosport Teachers Federal Credit Union’s commitment and long-term strategy to make financial education a priority in the community, the Clute, Texas-based credit union partnered with Brazoswood High School to host its first-ever reality fair in the Brazosport Independent School District on March 6.

In the reality fair, students are challenged to make sound financial decisions by learning about budgeting versus spending in a simulated real-world setting. By creating personal budgets and allocating dollars for commodities like food, housing, utilities, etc., students begin to shape intelligent thought processes and develop a sound understanding of managing money that can be built upon in the future.

After visiting all the stations, students take a final spin on the “Wheel of Reality” and learn how unexpected life events can impact a budget. With the help of the staff and volunteers from Cornerstone, more than 100 high school students rotated through their gym in participation of the event.

“It really is amazing to see the light bulb go off and the look on a student’s face when they realize the reality of managing personal finances," said BTFCU's CEO Donna Butterfras. "This is a real-world, hands-on approach that many of these students are being exposed to for the very first time."

BTFCU plans to host at least two of these events per year and recruit more volunteers to help. In conjunction with the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) program, students who successfully complete the classroom course and participate in the reality fair are eligible to join the credit union. The credit union builds on the education process by teaching members the importance of establishing good credit, among other financial education tools. The end game is to build loyal relationships and strong community ties that progress into adulthood.

BTFCU’s commitment to make financial education a priority for members is a core component of their strategy and highlights the "credit union difference," which can foster significant growth in a small community.
