On March 24, Beacon Federal Credit Union embarked on a new partnership with Goose Creek Memorial High School in Baytown, Texas. Inside the school, Beacon opened the city’s first student-operated credit union.

Over the past five years, Beacon FCU has formed various partnerships by offering free financial education sessions and activities with a number of schools in the Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District.

Chevron Phillips Global Academy is a fairly new program that’s offered throughout the school district, and Goose Creek Memorial High School serves as the site for the business academy sector of the program.

The high school branch is operated by two employees of Beacon FCU who supervise a team of high school students receiving real-life work experience in the banking world.

Carrie Brown, financial service representative at Beacon Federal Credit Union said, “This is one avenue in which the students that were selected to work in the branch can begin to learn financial management skills and to also educate their peers.”

The student tellers are able to perform most account transactions just like any other Beacon FCU location and have completed all required compliance training as regular Beacon FCU employees are also required each year.

Beacon FCU High School BranchBeacon FCU President/CEO Jack McAdoo says they are committed to supporting the GCCISD students through the financial literacy training and helping prepare them financially for adulthood. McAdoo added that as a financial cooperative, one of the credit union's goals is to empower young adults—future consumers—with financial maturity, which in turn will help them achieve a secure tomorrow.

Beacon FCU is also working with the students at Goose Creek Memorial who have expressed an interest in marketing as a career. The director of marketing at Beacon FCU will teach the students how to build credit union promotions for the school branch location, set goals, and analyze results from their campaigns.

Beacon Federal FCU was chartered as DuPont La Porte Federal Credit Union in March 1949. The credit union currently has four locations serving the Baytown, La Porte, Seabrook, and Clear Lake, more than $140 million in assets, and serves over 16,000 members.
