Arkansas, Oklahoma & Texas CUs Won't Compete Against Each Other at the State Level in National Awards Program
Monday, July 29, 2013 6:40 AM

The Cornerstone Credit Union League (League) received a valid question from a credit union marketer last week that warrants sharing with others. The credit union was preparing to submit an entry in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award, and wanted to know if credit unions in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas would be competing against each other at the state level. The answer is no.

At least in this year’s national awards program, the League will select a first, second and third place winner from three states. However, only first place winners will advance to the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) for judging at the national level. At the national level, credit unions compete against their peers from across the country.

Through Aug. 1 only, the League is accepting entries for the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award; Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award; Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award, and Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award.

Following is a brief description of each award:

Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award recognizes model credit union efforts to strengthen local institutions; improve the lives of nonmembers through community outreach (other than personal finance education), such as charity fundraising and support of public events.

Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award recognizes model credit union efforts to improve members’ lives through   programs (other than personal finance education), such as special loan modification program, wealth-building or debt reduction incentive program.

Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award recognizes model credit union efforts to teach personal finance concepts and skills to members and nonmembers under age 18. Examples might include classroom presentation series, peer-to-peer financial counseling, special savers or borrowers club.

Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award recognizes model credit union efforts to teach personal finance concepts as well as skills to members and non-members age 18 and older. Examples might include presentation series to a SEG group or one-on-one financial counseling or credit report review.

Additional information on the national awards program can be found in the Awards & Recognition section of this website.
