Arkansas Legislators Compromise on Workers’ Compensation
Monday, May 23, 2016 7:00 AM

Late Wednesday afternoon during the Arkansas special session, a compromise was reached on the challenging workers’ compensation issue.

The Workers’ Compensation Commission’s Death and Permanent Total Disability Trust Fund will continue to pay claims above the employers’ retention amount until June 30, 2019. The deal includes language that would limit the premium tax to 1.5 percent (currently at 3 percent) when the Fund’s claims are paid.

Ron Harrod, governmental affairs for Arkansas Credit Union Association, explains that this compromise means employers will not be exposed to any increased claim exposure before June 30, 2019, since the Fund will continue to take new claims.
