Arkansans Take Advantage of Recess to Visit Arkansas Lawmakers
Wednesday, August 16, 2017 6:55 AM

Last Friday, Arkansas Credit Union Association lobbyist Ron Harrod attended the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce Coffee with U.S. Rep. Steve Womack. Womack came in early to visit before he addressed the group, which is always a great opportunity to introduce yourself and put your credit union on the lawmaker's radar.

Once Womack began his talk, he spent 30 minutes addressing various issues and then took questions. He noted that the greatest problem we face is that people are polarized.

"Every 10 years, the census allows for the redrawing of district lines," Womack said. "Three-fourths of those running are in safe seats for their party, be it Democrat or Republican. There seems to be no middle ground, and the extremes of each party decide who gets re-elected."

They need 218 votes to get anything done, and 80 percent must agree, according to Womack. "Right now, Congress cannot do the basic functions of government," he said. "We can’t agree. We haven’t passed the budget appropriations for the October 1 deadline."

Womack looks continuously for a resolution. They have 12 days in September to address the budget appropriation and have to figure out a way to negotiate. Three fractious groups must work together to see if they can move forward to address the budget appropriation, health care, and corporate taxes.

Womack also said elections now are decided in the spring and summer not the fall election.

With your congressional leaders back home in their districts, now is an excellent time to connect with them. Following are the specific websites:
