Anatomy of a Disaster: How One CU Survived Hurricane Harvey
Thursday, November 30, 2017 6:55 AM

The latest edition of Perspectives Magazine has been mailed to affiliated Cornerstone credit unions. One of the highlights is the story about AMOCO Federal Credit Union called "Anatomy of a Disaster: How One Credit Union Survived Hurricane Harvey." Like many Southeast Texas credit union, Texas City-based AMOCO felt the full brunt of the hurricane's force.

"This storm was unprecedented, and there were many things that we made up on the fly or triaged as we were facing these challenges," said Shawn Bailey, president/CEO of AMOCO. "But we will learn from this and be better prepared in the future. However, throughout it all, we worked as a team together, and that is why we are AMOCO strong!"

With the influx of donations after Hurricane Harvey, the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation was able to issue Phase I grants that helped 41 AMOCO staffers and 2 AMOCO board members. Not only that, but AMOCO FCU leadership contributed $25,000 to the Foundation during our critical drive for recovery donations. Thanks to the generosity of many credit unions like AMOCO, the credit union system is able to take care of itself when disaster strikes.

"During times of disaster, we are reminded that the 'people helping people' philosophy and credit union cooperative principles—namely, cooperation among cooperatives—still ring very true throughout the movement," said Foundation Executive Director Courtney Moran. "We are grateful to AMOCO FCU for their generosity and paying it forward. The Foundation staff is truly blessed to have the opportunity to assist those staff and volunteers in their unforeseen time of need."

The Foundation is currently accepting Phase II disaster relief grant applications and providing additional support to credit union staff and volunteers with remaining significant needs. Also, the Foundation and CUAid are requesting public donations so the Foundation may continue helping people in need through the grants program. To donate, please visit
