Alamo Chapter of CUs Applauds Senate Confirmation of Julian Castro as HUD Secretary

Julian Castro

The Alamo Chapter of Credit Unions is applauding the Senate’s confirmation Julian Castro as the new secretary of Housing and Urban Development on Wednesday, elevating the rising Democratic star to President Obama's Cabinet.

"Our Mayor has always been a strong leader within our community and he's done a tremendous amount to further the recognition of San Antonio across the nation. Both he and his twin brother, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), have been ardent supporters of credit unions since a very young age and continue to champion our issues on the local, regional and national level. We are very excited and honored that he will be utilizing his leadership and advocacy skills to tackle some of our nation's most challenging issues; building hope for families across the country, just as credit unions do for our members," says Ashley M. Harris, president of the Alamo Chapter.

Not only is Castro and the Congressman supporters of credit unions, they have been members of Generations FCU since they were seven years old.

The vote was 71-27, with 18 Republicans supporting the prominent Latino Democrat. Castro, 39, has served for three terms as mayor of San Antonio, and was the keynote speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. His twin brother, Joaquin, is a Democratic congressman.

Obama nominated Castro after Kathleen Sebelius' decision to resign as Health and Human Services secretary prompted a reshuffling of his Cabinet. The previous HUD secretary, Shaun Donovan, is in line to replace Sylvia Mathews Burwell as budget director, after Burwell was confirmed as Sebelius' successor.
