Program: "Red Flags: Spotting the Signs of Exploitation" presented by Virginia Quinn

Just as with child abuse cases, Texas state law requires anyone who suspects abuse, neglect, or exploitation of an elderly or disabled person to report it. There are more than 3 million Texas residents who are 65 or older and 1.7 million people with a disability (ages 18-64). Last year, Adult Protective Services completed 81,681 investigations involving people living in their homes and confirmed 54,731 of them were victims of abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation. Sixty percent of those victims were elderly and the rest were younger adults with disabilities. The number of validated cases is on the rise and that upward trend is expected to continue as our population ages. This presentation will assist those in the financial services industry to spot an at-risk individual who needs help and will explain how the reporting process works. It will give employees some solid tools for intervention and show ways in which they can help to stem the rising tide of abuse, neglect, and exploitation among the most vulnerable members in our community, while avoiding personal and institutional liability.
